After spending hours investigating and reconfiguring my own e-mail workflow I settled on a few things.

  • Gmail is the centre of the world. All filters, contacts, organization (i.e. labels) must be centralized in Gmail and then synced to all other devices. 
  • Keeping the above in mind, Sparrow is my client of choice on the Mac.
  • And Mailroom on iPhone.
  • Its easy to set up Mac's Address Book so sync with Google Contacts.

Apple Mail currently falls short on effective threading (while the above workflow maintains Gmail style threading), lackluster search, slowness when dealing with large mailboxes and poor Gmail integration (labels are not treated as virtual mailboxes as they should - and even though you can set it up in a way so that they are - its unbearably slow if you have more than 10 labels). Obviously this will all change when Lion comes around ; but the above solution still holds one major advantage - portability. Since we're aiming for such tight Gmail integration, you can use Gmail.com anywhere and it will be exactly as you left it in Sparrow or Mailroom.

I seem to have become re-addicted to Dropbox, among other things. The problem is I find myself jumping between Box.net, Dropbox and Droplr. 

Droplr sits in my taskbar and is excellent for tweeting and instant sharing (especially screenshots). Its iPhone app is fantastic. 

Box.net is for heavy duty sharing, as an early adopter with lots of referrals I have 15GB with them. Anything that requires large files, lots of people and long-term collaborative sharing, nothing beats it. It's iPhone app, however, is lackluster to say the least.

Dropbox is for on-the-go sync goodness. Combining facets of Box.net and Droplr with it's generous storage, top-notch iPhone app, unique abilities and flexibility to suit any needs. 

Well, for now, I use all three, which is unfortunate right? I also use Backblaze to remotely access any files I need off my laptop at home. Below is some other things I've been mucking around with.
